Rajah Brooke’s Birdwing (RBB) is Malaysia’s national butterfly, being found in rainforests of Peninsular Malaysia as well as in Sabah and Sarawak. The Rajah Brooke’s Birdwing (Trogonoptera brookiana) is a species of butterfly that is renowned for its striking and vibrant appearance. It is named after Sir James Brooke, the first White Rajah of Sarawak, who ruled in the mid-19th century.  

The Rajah Brooke’s Birdwing butterfly features large wings that exhibit a stunning combination of black, green, and electric blue colours. The males typically possess longer and more elaborate tails compared to the females. This species is known for its graceful flight and its tendency to frequent rainforests and forested areas.

According to Dr. Phon Chooi Khim, an entomologist from the Forest Research Institute Malaysia (FRIM), Rajah Brooke’s Birdwing can be found in places with rich sources of minerals, which is why they are found near our natural hot springs! When their wings cuddle, it means that they are absorbing mineral components needed to activate adult behaviour, so that they can transfer the nutrients to the females during mating.
