Absolutely! Nestled in the serene small town of Kalumpang, Hulu Selangor, Beacon Resort is a hidden gem far removed from the intrusive glow of urban light pollution. During galaxy season, a single glance upwards reveals a breathtaking expanse of stars, making it an unparalleled destination for celestial observation.
For these dedicated astronomy enthusiasts, stargazing transcends mere entertainment—it’s a rigorous scientific pursuit. They lauded Beacon Resort for its exceptional conditions: vast open spaces, unobstructed panoramic views, and remarkably high nighttime visibility, all crucial for precise celestial observation.
After thorough scouting, the resort’s basketball court was strategically chosen as their primary stargazing base. Their reasoning was clear: an ideal stargazing spot requires flat, even ground to minimise the risk of equipment damage. Crucially, the basketball court’s proximity to public facilities and guest rooms also ensures a swift and effortless retreat in the event of unexpected strong winds or rain, guaranteeing a worry-free and comfortable stargazing experience for everyone.
As twilight deepened and night fully embraced the resort, the basketball court transformed into a bustling observatory. Students meticulously set up their stargazing equipment—some even proudly showcasing self-developed and assembled instruments. With focused determination, they adjusted angles to track distant celestial bodies or collaborated with their lecturers to fine-tune their sophisticated instruments. Witnessing their self-made devices glow faintly under the vast night sky, each one a vessel for their passion for the stars and dreams of cosmic exploration, was truly an awe-inspiring sight.
Adding to this immersive experience, Beacon Resort proudly offers its own professional smart telescope, the Seestar S50. This cutting-edge instrument allows our guests to actively participate in exploring the boundless cosmos and witness its wonders firsthand.
Thanks to the power of the Seestar S50 and the incredible images provided by the students, a plethora of celestial objects were successfully observed and captured at Beacon Resort. These include the magnificent M8 Lagoon Nebula, the striking M17 Omega Nebula, the intricate NGC 6334 Cat’s Paw Nebula, the vibrant NGC 6357 Lobster Nebula, the fascinating M27 Dumbbell Nebula, the iconic M51 Whirlpool Galaxy, and many more!
Among the highlights, Aqil, a talented student from the National University of Singapore (NUS), graciously shared stunning star images he captured of both the NGC 6357 Lobster Nebula and the NGC 6334 Cat’s Paw Nebula. These two visually striking nebulae, located within the constellation Scorpius, are true cosmic masterpieces. The Lobster Nebula, glowing in a deep red hue through the telescope, truly resembles a lobster extending its claws, nestled deep within its stellar nursery. Nearby, and often observed in tandem, is the aptly named Cat’s Paw Nebula, renowned for its distinctive paw-like shape.
Meanwhile, Kieran from NUS High School successfully snapped a remarkably clear image of the M27 Dumbbell Nebula using his own specialised equipment. This historical celestial object holds the distinction of being the very first planetary nebula ever discovered. It mesmerises observers with its ethereal glow of red, blue, and green gases, slowly expanding and dispersing into the vastness of the cosmos after a stellar explosion.
Our Seestar S50 also captured the majestic M8 Lagoon Nebula, a popular emission nebula located in the Sagittarius constellation, approximately 5,000 light-years from Earth. As a cloud of glowing gas often found in active star-forming regions, it typically appears in beautiful shades of pink or red, making it one of the easiest and most captivating celestial objects to observe through a telescope.
Another truly spectacular highlight was the M51 Whirlpool Galaxy. Unlike the nebulae, this is a stunning spiral galaxy situated about 31 million light-years from Earth, far beyond the confines of our own Milky Way. Much like our home galaxy, it is comprised of countless stars, nebulae, and planetary systems. What makes it particularly captivating is its appearance alongside a smaller companion galaxy (NGC 5195), where their powerful gravitational interaction creates the illusion of two galaxies gracefully pulling at each other, a cosmic dance of epic proportions.
Beacon Resort truly goes beyond offering just a comfortable vacation environment. It stands as an open and dynamic learning platform, wholeheartedly inviting you to delve into the vastness of the night sky and bravely step into the unknown universe! With our professional Seestar S50 smart telescope (pre-arrangement is needed for our resort staff to operate the equipment, and extra charges may apply), guests can enjoy an unforgettable and accessible stargazing experience right here. Simply aim it at the majestic night sky, connect it to your phone, and prepare to clearly capture the dazzling Milky Way, mysterious nebulae, and even distant, majestic galaxies that will leave you in awe.
We enthusiastically welcome more groups to visit and explore the stars with us. With minimal light pollution and a truly peaceful natural setting, Beacon Resort is unequivocally the perfect place to stargaze and embark on a personal journey to unravel the mysteries of the universe. Galaxy season is still ongoing, and the night sky remains beautifully clear. As long as you’re willing to slow down, look up, and open your mind, that vast and unknown universe will be there—patiently waiting for you to discover its infinite wonders!
